✦ The yoop study October 2026

What sells apps on TikTok and Reels. Measured.

We pulled 3,686 TikToks and 2,216 Reels from nearly 200 apps — 114 of them among the top earners in their category — and read the hits frame by frame. Most of them never show the app, and most could be made without filming anyone.

What we found

The hits aren’t ads for the app. They’re posts about its world.

Hits, not averages

A typical post gets about 1,460 views. The organic hits we studied got a median of 1.7M — about 480 times their own account’s usual. Finding the format that hits is the whole job.

Half the giants are paid

Many of the biggest brand videos were boosted: 0.5% likes against 4.5% on organic hits. Copy a boosted ad and you copy a budget, not a format.

Post where it’s cheaper

The same apps get 3.9 times more views on Reels than on TikTok. About half of the hits have no voice at all — just words on screen and a sound.

Hit vs. miss

Same account, same format. A median 300 times the views.

We paired 167 hits with a miss from the same account on the same platform, so the account’s size and budget are the same and what differs is the post. In 55 pairs the format was the same too, and the hit still got a median of 300 times the miss, 22 times at the least. These are the pairs our breakdown series takes apart.

The top earners

Being big doesn’t get you seen. The format does.

We did it again for the top-grossing apps of 17 categories. 114 of them run a TikTok — and on a normal day they’re barely seen either.

  • 3,300

  • 2.9×

Reels win for 81% of them

  • 65%

48 organic hits, frame by frame

Their hits look like everyone’s. The organic ones got a median of 950K views — 155 times their usual — and 44% open on a curiosity hook. Mascots, memes, a real screen played well. The paid ones give themselves away: 0.5% likes against 4.7%.

The formats

Seven formats that win — and need no one on camera.

  1. 1

    The niche meme

One line everybody in the niche recognises, over a found-looking clip or a drawn chat screenshot, with a trending sound.

WayShot 32.9M views · 11.9% likes “That friend who thinks everything is aesthetic:” Watch on TikTok ↗

Why it works. Read in a second, sent to a friend in two. The brand sits in the corner and still gets the follow.

How we make it. We write the line for your niche, draw the chat or caption card, and the sound is added in TikTok.

  2. 3

    The niche tutorial

A useful how-to from your users’ world, where your app happens to be the tool.

iScreen 7.4M views · 1.2% likes “iOS 18 vs iOS 26” — remake the new look on your phone Watch on TikTok ↗

Why it works. Useful gets saved, and a saved post keeps being shown. The product sells itself as the way to do it.

How we make it. Steps captioned over your app’s real screens, 10–20 seconds, one result at the end.

  3. 4

    The question

A question or quiz your audience can’t resist answering — with a countdown and a reveal.

Stardust 2.7M views · 14.0% likes “i was talking to this guy and he thought…” — a story that ends by asking for yours Watch on TikTok ↗

Why it works. Answers in the comments are the strongest push a post can get — the highest like rate in the study.

How we make it. Question, three answers, a 3-2-1 and the reveal — the series we post for our own app.

  4. 5

    The list

Three things, the best one last — tools, mistakes, spoilers, secrets.

WBuilds 3.0M views · 9.5% likes “3 websites and apps every Minecraft player should know” — faceless, with a voice Watch on TikTok ↗

Why it works. A number is a promise people stay for. Lists had the most shares and saves of any format.

How we make it. Three beats with captions over stills or screens, your app as one of the three.

  5. 6

    The “me when…”

A relatable caption over a moving still — and two seconds of your app as the punchline.

Opal 4.4M views · 1.2% likes “me having to work until 10pm because I’ve spent 4h scrolling” Watch on TikTok ↗

Why it works. The viewer sees themselves first and the product second, so it never feels like an ad.

How we make it. One line, one still brought to life, then your real screen answering it.

  6. 7

    The magic moment

The one tap where your app does the thing — shown on the real screen, with a hook before it.

Puzzlit 32K views · 3.5% likes “Day 6 of playing 100 chain links” — a daily series Watch on TikTok ↗

Why it works. It is what converts — which is why most of the big screen demos we found were paid boosts.

How we make it. Hook line, your real screen with a zoom on the tap, the result. Our pick for your paid tests.

  7. What we leave to people. Talking heads, skits, celebrities and live music win too — but they need a person on camera. When you want them, we bring in a creator.

Each category rests on 5–10 hits — a direction, not a law. That is why the Format Sprint tests 4–5 formats on your own app before anything runs.

How we measured

The method, and its limits.

  • Who. 101 TikTok accounts of iPhone apps in 11 categories: the biggest earners that link a TikTok from their site, and smaller apps with real revenue. Instagram Reels for 96 of them.
  • What. Each account’s 10 most popular and 10 latest TikToks (1,877) and its latest 12 Reels (1,101), public numbers only, pulled on 12 October 2026.
  • Hits. The strongest posts since July 2024 with 20K+ views, at most three per account: 107, read frame by frame. Hardware and media brands were left out of the format counts, which leaves 82, of which 46 organic.
  • The top earners. The top-grossing iPhone apps of 17 categories (213 apps), 114 of them on TikTok: the same pull, plus the Reels of 137. Their hits: 101 read frame by frame; accounts that turned out not to be the app’s own — a band, a fan page, a clothing brand — were left out, which leaves 78, of which 48 organic.
  • Paid or not. A post counts as boosted when TikTok marks it as an ad, or when it ran 100× past its account with under 1% likes. That is a rule of thumb, not a certainty.
  • “A typical post”. The median of each account’s own median — what a normal day looks like, not the best one.

Which of the seven is yours?

Send your app’s link. Apps making $50K+ a month or spending $10K+ a month on ads get a free reel in the format that wins in their category, up to 15 a week. Any app can start with the Format Sprint, which finds yours in 3 weeks.
